A clear blue sky here is often crisscrossed with traces of flights that left in search of their destination. The overhead dark wires of the tram line too signify charted paths. And against all this, the bird dares to take a flight, without a any chart to guide it home. Capturing such a moment in a balanced frame is not an easy task. However, it was the sort of answer the artist was perhaps waiting for.

This photograph is part of a series the artist shot in Basel in 2014 during a personally challenging time. In line with his practice of examining the routine and the mundane, he looked at the 'new' surroundings while seeking a resolution to his personal dilemma of where to be. He was juggling with questions about the meaning of presence, absence and transcending time. How much presence is an absence?
