Statement
Aleksandra Cegielska (b. 1985) is a Polish multidisciplinary artist based in Basel, Switzerland. Her practice spans painting, sculpture, textiles, performance, and public art, grounded in feminist theory, personal narrative, and bold social commentary. Working at the intersection of fashion, advertising aesthetics, and activism, Cegielska's work interrogates systems of power, gender norms, and the commodification of identity - often with a fierce visual language steeped in irony, sarcasm, and unapologetic color. Cegielska’s art is deeply autobiographical yet universally resonant. She often places herself within the frame -literally and metaphorically - exploring themes of body autonomy, media manipulation, femininity, migration, and memory. The vulva, a recurring motif in her work, is used symbolically to explore broader socio-political constructs including domestic abuse, reproductive rights, and the policing of bodies. Her visual vocabulary is striking: bold colors, graphic shapes, and tactile materials create works that seduce before they confront. Beyond visual art, Cegielska is also a writer and cultural commentator. She pens essays on feminism, art market inequalities, and social media’s impact on self-representation. Her voice is raw, intelligent, and often humorous -offering a grounded perspective on an art world in flux.
